Flirting with Fire
I’m hesitant at first,
Deadly heat rises from the flame
But in me there’s a thirst
Only quenched by this daring game.
Flames circling from above and below
Brain and body entranced by the power of the flow…
So misguided in false confidence,
One incorrect placement in this movement…
Brings my death lurking in this passionate dance
Will it burn my body past the point of improvement?
I start to wriggle in and out
Fire-flirting, and spinning, and ready to shout…
To the power of nature, and adventures at sundown
Never did I expect to submit so spontaneously
My strength and vigor will never be run down
This challenge has taken me light years, irreplaceably.
The whoosh as it circles me, from side to side
Brings me an intrinsic harmony-I’m along for the ride.
Explanation:
My most memorable and significant event this semester was when I finally got up the nerve to fire hoop. My friend had seen how much I enjoyed hooping with my light-up hoop and decided to buy my a hoop with five wicks on it. Once it came in, I was delighted but also a bit terrified. The first time I lit up the hoop was exhilarating but unfortunately I didn’t have the right type of fuel. So really the most unforgettable time was my second time trying the hoop out. I was at a party and my friend had lighter fluid, so we decided to go out back and try it out. I felt so amazingly daring and yet graceful, and I started to realize that the moves are in my muscle memory if only I have the guts to actually try them while the flames surround me and could potentially burn me.
The reason why I consider this event to be so significant is because it has expanded and refreshed my outlook on trying new things and not being afraid to take a risk now and then. I have proved to myself that I am capable of so much if I persevere; most of the rewarding things in life do not come easily. I also find this event important because it brought me back to a primitive, meditative state where I truly was able to live in the moment and enjoy every second of it. This experience undoubtedly helped trigger even more of my interest in using the hoop professionally and as a complete lifestyle changer. It has also served to symbolize my leap into adulthood and the heavy responsibilities and risks that accompany it.
In order to interpret the feelings I experienced during this event, I wrote a poem entitled “Flirting with Fire”. It describes the deathly dance I have when I hoop with fire that ranges from intimidated and hesitant to full-on fearless twirling and spinning. I chose this medium for my presentation because it gives a sort of inner-dialogue to my story. Poetry helps exaggerate and highlight the ups and downs of human emotion, and it also helps capture an unforgettable memory like this in a succinct yet seductive manner. Using this platform for communication brought my thoughts, feelings, actions, and words together so that I could emphasize how it felt to take a risk and live in that moment without backing down.
