About Me:
My name is Kathryn Rustemeyer, also known as Scarlett. As a dancer, painter, hooper, festival-goer, and creator, my range of interests is overwhelmingly vast. I hail from Findlay, Ohio, from where I expanded my passion and skill set in the areas of art and dance, as well as academics.
Although I started dancing as a small child, my true turning point was when I decided to start ballet at the age of ten under the instruction of Judy Reading. This art form seemed quite foreign, confusing, and challenging at first but among all the frustrations I found an intense drive to better myself and improve upon my ballet technique, leading me to continue ballet through high school. With each year came new struggles, joys, failures, and successes, and my love affair with moving my body and expressing my emotions actually brought me here, to the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where I was accepted into the Ballet program through an audition process, and will be pursuing a degree in Ballet. I plan to use my ballet degree to join a dance company and/or tour as a performer at festivals and concerts (at which I could also utilize and infuse my performance with my skills in hula-hooping).
Another passion I nurtured through my schooling years is the fine arts. Ever since my early childhood, I have had an obsession with drawing, doodling, painting, and creating anything and everything. In high school, I took as many art classes as I possibly could and started doing independent studies to try and discover what my favorite medium was, which turned out to be oil paint. My senior year really solidified my love for oil painting, and I began a series of surrealistic paintings, mostly portraits, which gathered much attention from my peers and inspired me to see how far I could go in making things look realistic but also mind-bending. My proudest moment of senior year was winning best in show in the Findlay High School Art Show. So far I have been commissioned for three paintings and hope to continue promoting my art as much as I can. At UC, even though it is physically impossible to pursue both a degree in ballet and art (the schedules conflict) I still create art, mostly paintings, on a regular basis and plan to partially sustain myself off of the art I have created. Painting is much like breathing for me, so I know that I will never stop because my life simply wouldn't feel the same without it.
